About Course

Online awareness training that teaches tower and rooftop telecom workers to recognize radiofrequency (RF) hazards, follow site controls, and stop work when exposure is uncertain.

By: Vertical Academy | Format: Online, self-paced | Certification validity: 2 years | Language: English | Last Updated: 10/28/26

Description

This course is based on the Federal Communications Commission RF exposure rules (47 CFR 1.1307(b) and 1.1310) and on the OSHA provisions that apply to telecommunications work, including 29 CFR 1910.268, 29 CFR 1910.97, and the General Duty Clause. It also refers to industry consensus guidance such as IEEE C95.1. It covers RF hazards on towers, rooftops, and collocated multi-carrier sites, and the controls workers rely on before working near transmitting antennas.

The course is intended for tower climbers, rooftop and antenna installers, field technicians, and supervisors who work on or near telecommunications transmitting equipment. It is awareness-level training. It does not replace site-specific RF surveys, your employer’s RF safety program, or coordination with the carrier.

Learners who complete all lessons and pass the final exam receive a Vertical Academy completion certificate with a unique certificate number and QR code verification.

Topics covered

  • Based on FCC 47 CFR 1.1307(b) and 1.1310 and on OSHA rules for telecommunications work
  • Module 1: RF Fundamentals (RF basics, telecom RF equipment, health effects)
  • Module 2: Rules and Responsibilities (who regulates what, occupational exposure, MPE and multiple sources, stop-work and compliance)
  • Module 3: RF Hazards on Towers and Rooftops (tower hazard patterns, rooftop and microwave hazards, collocation, antenna swap decision points)
  • Module 4: Signs, Surveys, and Monitors (signs, zones, and surveys; how RF monitors work; alarm response; turning survey data into decisions)
  • Module 5: Planning and Coordinating Work (pre-task review, coordination and access control, shutdown and verification, communications and stop-work)
  • Module 6: Emergency Response and Field Scenarios (immediate response, reporting and return to work, scenario walkthroughs)
  • Final exam: 20 questions, pass mark 80%, 3 attempts; after a third failed attempt, contact Vertical Academy
  • Vertical Academy completion certificate with certificate number and QR verification

What Will You Learn?

  • What RF energy is, where it comes from on telecom sites, and why you cannot rely on your senses to detect it
  • Who regulates RF exposure: FCC limits for licensees and OSHA duties for employers, and the difference between occupational and general-population limits
  • How to read RF signs, zones, and survey data, and how to use a personal RF monitor correctly
  • How to plan and coordinate work near antennas, including carrier-confirmed power reduction or shutdown
  • How to respond to a monitor alarm or suspected overexposure: stop, withdraw safely while staying protected from falls, and report
